The
feeling of homesickness can affect us all at any given time or place. Being
away from home and trying to settle in to your new surroundings can be
frightening and intimidating. Research shows that up to 70% of university
students experience this feeling within the first few days at their University.
However, it can be both managed and overcome with a handful of hacks.- Make your dorm room look like home. It’ll make it feel more familiar to you.
- Bring your teddy bear. A simple glance at an item close to your heart can improve your overall mood!
- Deal with it! Chances are that your surroundings aren't as scary as you think they are, so check them out.
- Remember "Pitch Perfect?" Join new groups and organizations on campus (they're probably aca-awesome) as way to meet new people like you and get comfortable.
- Do new things. Go to an ethnic restaurant down the block or that psychic show on campus. You never know what you might end up liking.
- Find a “little taste of home.” Nothing brings you back home like the sweet taste of your favorite candy or the deliciousness of your favorite meal. Call a loved one and ask for a homemade recipe, then invite your friends over to try it!
Homesickness is a part of life but
with these hacks, it will seem less frightening and much more manageable! After
all, there’s no place like home.
